BIRTHSONG, 1997

Ink and photographic chemicals on photographic paper
31-part installation, overall dimensions 180cm x 480cm

Selected for inclusion in Good Grief, Institute of Modern Art (IMA), Brisbane 1997, curated by Lynn Seear, QAG.

Dedicated to the memory of my friend, the late Philippino artist Roberto Villanueva (see Other Projects, Baguio).
My title is a pun on the title of Villanueva’s last work, Earth Song.
My images of neo-natal babies born on the day of his death re-interpret his notion of regeneration and spiritual renewal. These larger images are on matt photographic paper and are interspersed with smaller images of intrauterine life using gloss photographic paper. Both his and my work involved community participation; in my case, parents were invited, via liaison with local hospitals, to make available photos of their newly born babies.
The work serves to create a spiritual bridge across national boundaries, reflecting on the cycle of life, honouring a friend, and blessing the newly born, symbols of new beginnings and life itself.
